Desperate desires for a smaller core have sparked the popularity of waist training corsets as the new fitness trend floods social media. The old tradition of binding your body to create a smaller mid-section has returned to haunt the health and fitness industry.
The celebrity endorsed trend has generated almost 530,000 Instagram hashtags sharing mixed views on the waist cinching cult.

Gold Coast fitness bikini model competitor Katie-Lee Bracefield said women need to think about what these corsets are doing to the insides of their body.
“A corset essentially binds your waist into an unnatural shape,” Miss Bracefield said. “It is squishing your organs and ribs and restricting movement through compression.”
Miss Bracefield is concerned that wearing these corsets during exercise results in poor performance due to limited lung capacity.
“I definitely can see damage happening to their diaphragms,” Miss Bracefield said. “If people are wearing these while working out it will affect their ability to take full breathes.”

The trend encourages women to wear the corset up to 12 hours a day for months in order to see results. Miss Bracefield explained that prolonged use of any waist bonding may deteriorate vital main abdominal muscles.
“Your core already has a supportive belt built in,” Miss Bracefield said. “Over time wearing those corsets will weaken your natural supportive belt and can cause back pain.”
Elite Military Fitness Centre’s Personal Trainer Hayden Allen believes waist training corsets are ridiculous. “Something like that can’t be good for your insides at all,” Mr Allen said. “It is just another lazy fad to lose weight.”
“People just need to sacrifice eating unhealthy foods and manage their time for 30 minutes a day of exercise.”
