There are some essential brushes everyone needs in their makeup collection – even if you’re not a makeup lover!
MORE: Five Ways To Apply Foundation
Face
Makeup brushes for your face are a top priority. When you use a makeup brush instead of your hands, you eliminate the chances of spreading bacteria. Plus, different brushes can give you different finishes.
Foundation
The new trend for foundation is all about buffing it in. When you buff in foundation it merges the product with your skin and gives it a more natural look. It also creates a thinner base for you to build up layers for fuller coverage. The best types of brushes for this are buffing brushes or kabuki brushes.
Concealer
Concealer brushes can be optional, as you can easily use your foundation brush to blend in your concealer. I personally prefer to use a concealer brush though for a better application. So if you’re like me then this is the type of brush you’ll need. Get something small and fluffy, just a bit bigger than an eyeshadow blending brush. If the brush has a tapered tip it’ll really help to get in the corners of the eye where it’s the darkest.
Powder
Buying a powder brush is pretty simple. They’re usually just a standard brush to use when powdering your face. You’ll want to get something soft and fluffy, but thick or sparse, depending on the type of application you’re after. A dense powder brush will apply more powder onto your face, while a sparse powder brush applies less product.
Bronzer/Blush
If you’re really on a budget, don’t have a lot of room for a lot of brushes, or can’t justify spending money on them, then you can use the same brush for your bronzer and blush. Go for a brush that is fluffy, but significantly smaller than a powder brush. Like a powder brush, use a brush that has a lot of bristles for a heavier application, or less bristles for less application. My favourite type of brush to use for bronzer and blush is an angled one to really help sculpt the face. Make sure you wipe off the product between uses to get the different products off.
Eyes
I know some people who can complete their entire eye looks only using their fingers. This baffles me! I’m definitely the type of person who needs to use 10 eyeshadow brushes every time I do my eyes. But if I had to cut it down, these are ones I would use.
Blending
A blending brush is an absolute must have. Not only can it be used to apply a wash of colour over your eyelids, but it can help buff out any mistakes you make and give you an overall gorgeous look.
Flat shader
A flat shader brush is something you’ll use to pack colour into the eyelid. It’s small, flat, and really helps to intensify colour when you pat on the eyeshadow.
Pencil
A pencil brush or a pointed brush will become your best friend. These little brushes are used for so many different things. You can use them to apply shadow to the lash line, top and bottom. You can use it with black eyeshadow for a smokey eyeliner look. And they’re even used best to darken the outer corner of your eyes or darken up the crease.
