‘Tap into the new season; spin, swing and whirl. Clothes that move in tune with the body are the most liberating of all.’
MORE: Steal Her Style: Karlie Kloss
One of the world’s most famous fashion photographers, Patrick Demarchelier was born in France in 1943. Now based in the US, his photos regularly appear in top publications such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, Rolling Stone, Newsweek and Elle.
His latest work for Vogue UK is titled ‘Ensemble Pieces’, featuring IMG’s Karlie Kloss. Fashion editor Lucinda Chambers selected the clothes for the editorial, creating outfits that are retro yet also on-trend. Karlie’s up-do styled by Sam McKnight in combination with chunky plastic earrings and some serious winged eyeliner has a distinctly Mod vibe. Her fresh, all-American look is transformed into a strikingly wide-eyed facsimile of Jean Shrimpton circa 1965.
Featuring pieces by Céline, Balenciaga and Valentino, the shoot focuses on dramatic lines and blocks of colour without a feeling of constriction. There’s a strong sense of freedom with structure, like a ballet dancer balancing superb athleticism with refined elegance. Beautifully cut formal pieces are combined with casual halter tops, Mary Janes and legwarmers. Every shot gives a feeling of movement and comfort rather than stiff and regimented designer fashion.
As the Northern hemisphere moves into autumn, the bright and vibrant colours of Spring/Summer 2015 are replaced by blacks and tans with pops of deep red and emerald green. Ensemble Pieces features beautiful rich reds with standouts being a Marni grenache silk dress and a two-tone leather bag by Céline.
