Black and white is in; The crop is out. Welcome to Derby Day ladies and gentlemen, the first big day of the Spring Racing Carnival, and the first big chance for the fashion elite to hit the track running.

The weather may have been less than ideal, but that didn’t put a damper on things in the exclusive marquees, where the style stakes were high, and the heels even higher. It’s not hard to see why our best dressed picks were the fashion front runners; these ladies were the epitome of elegance and sophistication, all sporting modern takes on the traditional back and white theme, with stylish success.

Racing royalty, Kate Waterhouse (pictured above), knows a thing or two about dressing for the track, and this Lanvin dress, with Dolce and Gabbana headpiece is no exception. Fresh and simple, the 50’s silhouette is lady-like glamour at its best, and the slightest touch of pale yellow lifts the entire outfit. The fashion blogger also rocked some serious hardware on her head, with the gold coin style headpiece adding drama and complementing her wavy, loose curls.

Model Montana Cox showed the boys how it’s done, dressing weather appropriate in a Farage suit and Suzy O’Rourke headpiece. Her androgynous look was sleek and strong in a sea of dress and skirt combos, yet the netted veil provided just the right amount of femininity and flair.

Jennifer Hawkins

No stranger to best dressed lists, and with strong race day experience under her belt, Jennifer Hawkins was once again ridiculously gorgeous in Alex Perry. In her black lace and leather number Hawkins had the wow factor, and the classic wide brim hat was an inspired choice amongst crowns and delicate headbands. A most consistent performer who never fails to get it right, Hawkins knows exactly what is required of Derby Day fashion.

Jodi Anasta

Jodi Anasta pushed the boundaries of the newly instated crop top ban in a two piece Tony Maticevski outfit. The demure pale grey and white ensemble (which thankfully overlapped across the midriff, eliminating any chance of a fashion slip up) was also 50’s inspired, with the full, mid length skirt perfectly suited to the occasion. A low ponytail adorned with a delicate Anna Shoebridge pearl headpiece completed the minimalist look.

Also in Tony Maticevski, Nadia Bartel was a monochrome vision in an off-the-shoulder, mid length dress. With cascading waves in stark contrast to a sculptural Studio Aniss headpiece, Bartel’s knowledge as a fashion blogger was on display. Finishing the chic look was a black Saint Laurent bag, which just added to the flawlessness.
