BB Creams VS Foundations

bb creams and foundations

There are so many different skin bases to choose from these day, sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference between them all.

When choosing between a BB cream and a foundation, there are a few things to consider, like: coverage, skin type, skin benefits, skin tones, and consistency. Once you’ve figured out what type of look you’re going for, choosing your skin base should be a piece of cake.

BB Creams

BB creams are something you want to wear on an everyday basis. They’re quick, easy to apply, and have a decent amount of coverage. I lived on Maybelline’s Dream Pure BB Cream for years as my everyday base. It has a consistency similar to a foundation, but slightly less coverage. BB creams and BB cream-like products such as this, are good for people that don’t have too many blemishes or don’t have many imperfections on their face. They’re quick to just slap on with your hands if you’re running late or want a more natural look. BB creams are supposed to be moisturising, have skincare benefits, and usually have built-in primers.

The problem with BB creams is usually the colour range. There aren’t many skin colours to choose from, so finding your perfect match can be harder for some people. Some BB creams also don’t cater to different skin types (oily skin, dry skin, combination skin), which can be a problem with how they wear through the day.

Foundations

One of the main differences and deal breakers between foundations and BB creams is the coverage. Unlike BB creams, foundation are meant to cover every last imperfection on your face. They’re perfect for people with scarring, acne, or hyperpigmentation. Foundations can be used for the day and night for a full on flawless look, and there are also some lightweight foundation options for people who don’t like heavy makeup (my favourite lightweight foundation is MAC Studio Face and Body).

Foundations can be built up or sheered out, unlike BB creams. Another benefit of wearing a foundation is the colour range and type. There are a lot more shades to choose from, as well as different kinds of foundations for different skin types, and different finishes (Maybelline FitMe Matte and Poreless).
