There’s been some controversy this year at the Cannes Film Festival with new rules coming in to play that are quite upsetting. No flats have been allowed on the red carpet with older women and those with medical conditions being turned away for wearing rhinestone flats: a discriminatory version of survival of the fittest to say the least.

The other new rule for this year was the no selfie rule on the red carpet. Beinf described at grotesque by Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux, celebrities were politely asked not to snap with their smart phones on the red carpet. Paris Hilton, never one for the rules, blatantly took a selfie with Sun Zu Yang, while other celebrities like Eva Longoria and Salma Hayek posted photos with a red carpet background, secretly (or not to secretly) disobeying the rules.
Besides the latest controversies, the fashion continued to excite. As one of the most glamorous events of the year, with haute couture by the handful, it’s always exciting to see who wore what.
Lupita Nyong’o was once again at the top of the best dressed list, doing a fluttery twirl in her green Gucci gown. The green hue was stunning against Lupita’s skin and her well-to-do bun and jewelled hair accessories complemented the jewels on the Gucci gown. Salma Hayek also stunned in Gucci, showing off ample cleavage in a bright purple gown that had all eyes on the actress. Charlize Theron was also in a bright colour in a yellow, Dior Haute Couture strapless gown. Looking polished and elegant, the actress and her train swanned along the red carpet with ease. Natalie Portman was also spotted in Dior, this time a red strapless, so chic with her sleek locks.
Women all over the red carpet were dressed in Atelier Versace, with sexy yet sophisticated looks. Doutzen Kroes cut a streamlined figure in a white, one shouldered Atelier Versace that showed off some Victoria’s Secret leg, while Karlie Kloss chose a sparkly gown-pant hybrid that showed off a strip of toned abs. Natasha Poly also showed off some leg in a very va-va-voom Atelier Versace strapless gown.
Now we can’t forget other big names like Valentino Haute Couture, Michael Kors and Alexander McQueen among others. Sienna Miller looks perfectly ladylike and humble in a cute Valentino Haute Couture gown with kite detailing, while Natasha Poly went for an attention grabbing plunging, gold Michael Kors gown. Salma Hayek had all eyes on her again in a patterned Alexander McQueen while Zoe Kravitz chose Valentino Haute Couture to make her statement in white.
Of course there are many more looks to cast your eyes on, and we’ve picked out our favourites in the gallery below. Who was your best dressed at the Cannes Film Festival?
