New York Fashion Week has once again left us in awe of what designers are capable of, not only with their designs but their runway shows. As always, there are some trends being seen among designers for the coming season. The biggest trends from the 2015 Spring New York Fashion Week are:
Gingham
Ditching the classic red and black gingham, this season designers have played on the softness of Spring with shades of blue and sheer fabrics. Diane von Furstenberg was a stand out with her sheer variation of this trend, while Altuzarra chose baby blue and plunging necklines and thigh splits to give the gingham some sex appeal. Gingham also appeared at Lela Rose with cut outs showing off the stomach and Michael Kors showed us a crinkled gingham suit.
Crisp whites
A crisp white button up is now all the rage this spring, being seen all over the runway and through street style. Luckily, you probably already have this trend piece in your wardrobe and you already know how to rock it. This season we’re seeing it under dresses, with skirts or open over swimwear. Layered whites also made an appearance at Victoria Beckham, Prabal Gurung, DKNY and BCBG Max Azria.
Floaty fabrics
Designers are embracing floaty fabrics for their spring collections with dresses, tops and skirts being relaxed and light. BCBG Max Azria, Nanette Lepore and J.Mendel have all included floaty chiffon maxi dresses in their collections, and many pieces from this trend are sheer and/or patterned.
Oversized jackets
Be it a trench, coat or blazer, the oversized jacket has hit the runway in many variations such as Theory’s sleeveless calf length trench and Jason Wu’s oversized olive-green coat. In fact, the slouch trend has become a staple of this season’s runways with designers incorporating it as soft, militant or even sporty with the use of relaxed fit parkas.
Brights
While there were pastels seen in New York this week, the focus was on the bright colours. Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors and Nanette Lepore showed seasonal brights for that blast of colour.
Special note: It has to be said that the crop top is still in season! Continuing its reign on the runway, the abdominal bearing piece has been seen with skirts and bermuda shorts and should be of special note that it is still definitely in season. It has been featured on the NYFW runways of Alexander Wang, Oscar de la Renta, Diane von Furstenberg, Marc Jacobs, Honor and more.
