The beauty of makeup is that it wipes off. We can change our entire face with a few different products. We can appear slimmer, more youthful, more tanned or pale, but best of all we can enhance our features.
Makeup is really great – when you know how to use it. When we first start playing around with makeup we can make some mistakes, but we learn and progress the more we use it. If you’re still getting used to makeup or aren’t sure of a few things, then here are some makeup ‘don’t’s’ for you.

- Don’t match your foundation to your hand or face. Your hands are a lot darker than your face because they usually see more sun, plus they’re a different texture. Don’t match your foundation to you face either. The reason for this is because we want our foundation to match our neck. Instead, you’ll want to match your foundation to your neck skin colour. That way your foundation will blend in easily with your neck and you won’t get that foundation-mask look.
- Don’t apply makeup on dry skin. Always make sure your skin is moisturised before applying your foundation. This plumps and hydrates your skin, making a better base for your foundation to sit on.
- Don’t ‘pump’ your mascara. When you pump your mascara want to get more product you’re pushing air inside the tube which causes it to dry out faster.
- Don’t leave powders on your skin. When you apply a powder like bronzer, blush, or even eyeshadow make sure you blend them out properly. Leaving powders on your skin without blending them out can look streaky and overdone. When you blend them out properly is gives a softer, more finished look.
- Don’t use a think or oily concealer under the eyes. This will crease and settle into your fine lines – which is not so flattering.
- Don’t wear eyeliner just on your waterline. When your wear eyeliner only on your bottom waterline it closes the eye, making your eyes look smaller.
- Don’t overdo it! Don’t overdo makeup in general. Sometimes less is more – at least in this case. Use just enough makeup to cover imperfections or enhance your natural beauty.
