Movies are a top place to spot killer pieces or grab style inspiration from. Hello, Clueless much? So when it comes to things like evening gowns, there’s no better place that to spy how a dress walks and moves than on one of our favourite characters.
We’ve all seen the lists of the most iconic evening dresses in the movies. There’s Audrey Hepburn in the black Givenchy at Breakfast At Tiffany’s, Michelle Pfieffer in Scarface, and of course, that red off-the-shoulder number that Julia Roberts appeared in in Pretty Woman. Even Clueless makes the list with Cher’s tiny Calvin Klein dress, though it’s not exactly black tie. Olivia Newton John’s classic white number in Grease and the navy spaghetti strap dress that Julia Stiles wears in 10 Things I Hate About You are dresses that we remember clearly.
So we’re picking out our most favourite evening gowns from modern movies to draw inspiration from. The early 2000’s are filled with 10 years worth of gorgeous evening gowns that are so memorable that definitely had an impact on the way we dressed. It’s strange to think that most of these movies were shot ten years ago, so let’s take a trip gown memory lane and take a look at the best evening gowns from movies in the early 2000’s.
10. Amanda Bynes in She’s The Man
While Amanda Bynes may be off the acting job now, she used to be hilarious and very talented. We all remember the soccer movie where Channing Tatum was seriously hot, and Amanda plays a tomboy who, in the end, does the debutante ball as her mother had always wished. Showing up in a green dress instead of traditional white, the satin gown was a lovely pick that inspired girls everywhere to dress outside the traditional scales.
9. Rachel McAdams in Mean Girls
The cult-hit Mean Girls still gets quoted today, more than 10 years after its release. During the Spring Fling, Rachel McAdams, who plays Regina George shows up in a pink, strapless, satin mini dress with her spinal frame covered in flowers. This dress has no doubt been an inspiration for costume parties all over the world. And while not the most classic of evening gowns, it’s still very memorable.

Such an intense movie about love and jealousy, Keira Knightley’s green evening gown has us feeling both. The Jacqueline Durran spaghetti strap gown is just spectacular. There are no other words for the vintage inspired masterpiece.
7. Jennifer Lopez in Maid In Manhattan
Back when Jennifer Lopez was the queen of romantic comedies, she starred in Maid in Manhattan, which was a favourite among early 2000s movies – seriously she was in a new romantic comedy every year up until 2006. When Jennifer Lopez steps onto screen in that pale pink, strapless gown with the diamond necklace, all mouths dropped, because she looked absolutely stunning.
6. Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries
The lady we all love to hate, Anne Hathaway was extremely popular after starring in The Princess Diaries. A Disney movie like no other, Hathaway was charming and funny and emerged in that strapless princess gown to introduce herself to the world. I don’t know about you, but the sleek, sophistication was quite moving.
5. Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada
Anne Hathaway was all about the transformation movies back in the day. Transforming from dowdy Andy into chic Andrea, the black, lace shouldered John Galliano gown that she wears to the ball is fabulous and a great change from her chunky, blue jumper.
4. Hilary Duff in A Cinderella Story
Probably one of our favourite Hilary Duff movies was when she was a diner girl and she got to kiss Chad Michael Murray. She appeared in the spotlight in a wedding dress inspired gown that complemented her tiny waist and brought the ball gown style back into fashion for wedding dresses. Well done, Hilary, well done.
3. Jennifer Lopez in Shall We Dance
Do you see a pattern emerging here? Jennifer Lopez was the sexy dance teacher in the hit, which also starred Richard Gere as the attractive older man. Appearing at the competition in that yellow, sparkly gown was one of J-Lo’s best movie moments, hitting every nail on the head. It even looks like something she would still wear today.
2. Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge
As if Moulin Rouge isn’t already one of the funnest movies ever, it’s fabulously attired. Directed by Baz Luhrrman and with costumes by Oscar award winning Catherine Martin, of course this classic movie makes it to number two. With Nicole Kidman in that gorgeous, vintage inspired red gown, there could be no wrong in the world.
1. Kate Hudson in How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days
A now to number one! Perhaps the most iconic dress of early 2000’s movies was Kate Hudson in that gorgeous yellow gown, dripping with diamonds and on the arm of Matthew McConnaghuey. The slinky yellow number is definitely one of the most recognised movie dresses from hit romantic comedies and is the most fabulous of them all.
