Just when you thought you know it all when it comes to beauty… Think again!
MORE: How To Look Good On The Go
Myth #1: Split ends can be repaired
This beauty myth is common, but sadly false. But you can’t feel too bad as popular haircare brands perpetuate this myth by continually advertising the next best product claiming to “banish split ends!” Split ends are caused through excessive heat through warm showers, sun exposure and excessive heat styling. The only effective treatment for pesky hair fraying is the regular snip.
Myth #2: You can shrink pores
Always beware of skincare and makeup products claiming to shrink pores. Truth is, the size of your pores is largely determined by genetics and there is no real effective treatment to minimise them. The best answer is to regularly cleanse and exfoliate to ensure that dirt and oil don’t exaggerate larger pores. Special primers such as Benefit’s The POREfessional ($53, available from Myer) are also fantastic at filling in pores and diffusing their large appearance.
Myth #3: Pumping mascara is better for application
In fact, the opposite is true! Continually pumping the mascara wand in an attempt to grab more product forces an excessive amount of air into the product, causing it to dry out more quickly. It can also overload product onto the bristles and leave you in a gloopy mess. Try pulling the wand gently, scraping excessive product onto the sides of the tube or on a tissue for perfect application.
Myth #4: Cutting your hair will make it grow faster
When you really think about it, this idea doesn’t even make sense! How could trimming the ends of your locks possibly affect hair growth that occurs from the roots? Rapidly growing hair after a fresh cut is just an illusion, as we’re trimming off our damaged ends. Getting the chop can make hair look healthier, but it won’t make you look like Rapunzel – sorry!
Myth #5: Makeup prevents your skin from breathing
Some people complain that wearing makeup prevents their skin from breathing. But our skin is simply not laden with tiny lungs that are capable of inhaling or exhaling, it receives oxygen and nutrients carried in the blood. So, while heavy creams and foundations can make the outer skin less able to sweat, absorb moisture and and eliminate toxins, your skin is just simply not gasping for air.
