Jessica Mauboy knows a thing or two about a style evolution. The confident, sassy woman we are used to seeing up on stage is a far cry from the shy, reserved teenager introduced to us way back in the 2006 season of Australian Idol. Gone is that cutesy, girl next door persona; instead, replaced by a mature and captivating Mauboy, who isn’t afraid to push the boundaries.
Whilst her incredible voice has always been her trademark, it’s her recent style choices that have really elevated Mauboy onto our sartorial radar. Mauboy has (smartly) found herself in some very good company, with Josh Goot, Toni Maticevski and Alex Perry just a few of the Australian designers who have dressed the pop princess for various premiers, performances or editorial shoots. This essentially ensures that Mauboy’s red carpet game is flawless, as she consistently looks amazing in everything from bright statement pieces, to structured minimalism, and girly, glamorous gowns. And there is nothing better than a gorgeous Aussie girl rocking Aussie designers, with Mauboy being the perfect poster girl for representing our down under designers.
Mauboy knows the secret to dressing down as well, however, and it’s all about the accessories. A statement pair of sunglasses are every girl’s best friend, whether you team them with the classic jeans and shirt combo (round lenses preferable), or add some va va voom to your slouchy airport transit style with white, bright cat eyes. A great pair of sunglasses can really bring a whole outfit together, and by mixing your styles up, you are guaranteed to create a new look each and every time. The Louis Vuitton backpack Mauboy totes around probably doesn’t hurt either, and goes a long way in explaining the wide smile that accompanies each outfit. We’d be grinning all the time too if our accessories were so luxe!
Need any more convincing Mauboy is your 2015 style spirit animal? She has just gone and done what we’ve all been wanting to do this summer – chopped off her flowing, long locks in favour of the haircut of the year; the bob. It’s one of the most significant parts of Mauboy’s style transformation, and really signifies her coming of age and new found sophistication. It also cements her status as ‘Woman With Most Enviable Hair In Australia’ which goes nicely alongside her other title; ‘Woman Whose Wardrobe We Would Most Likely Want To Raid.’
It would appear as though Mauboy is just getting started, fashionably speaking. Her style instincts are daring, yet still chic, and her fun fashion attitude is something we could all use a little bit more of. Plus, her ability to make any outfit infinitely cooler with the right pair of sunglasses is a much desired skill. Move over girl next door, Jessica Mauboy has graduated to style queen.
