Spring is just around the corner, and to celebrate with the sunshine, flowers and beautiful days, we should be cleaning out our wardrobes to get rid of all the last season pieces.

MORE: Kickstart Your Spring Clean

Our fashion year starts in spring, purely because of the cleanout we do at the end of winter to prepare us for the year. As we start to come away from sweater weather and into bikini season we need to give ourselves a good clean out to prepare our closets for the new pieces that we are to buy in the coming year.

If your wardrobe is looking a little more cluttered than chic, it’s time to follow our steps to get rid of the pieces you no longer need which includes anything nostalgic, ill-fitted pieces and things you don’t wear. It’s time to get tough with this spring clean, ladies. I know it’s hard to let go of some of our old favourite pieces, but short, peplum skirts are so last year, even Kim K wouldn’t be seen in them again.

Get rid of:

Anything you haven’t worn in over a year

If you’ve noticed that something has been sitting in your wardrobe that you haven’t worn when all the seasons have passed, it’s time to get rid of it. You’re unlikely to wear it again over the next cycle of seasons, so free up the space for something that will get some love. This also goes for items that still have tags and have never left the closet plus pieces that you are keeping for nostalgic reasons only.

Anything that doesn’t fit

Ill-fitting clothes are a big no-no. Whether they’re too big or too small, something that doesn’t fit you right is going to leave you looking a bit frumpy or fat, or just a bit silly. Stick to pieces that you know fit you well and complement your body shape.

Anything that has passed it’s use-by date

If you bought into a super obvious trend that is no longer around and you doubt will come back soon, it’s time to get rid of it. Use this time to look at the pieces you are throwing out and focus on investing in timeless pieces that don’t lose credibility too soon.

Once you’ve eliminated the pieces of clothing from your closet that don’t suit you, you can spend time looking for ones that do. Elegant, chic pieces are easy to come by when you’re looking in the right place, so follow your fashion instinct and start to gradually fill your closet with pieces that mean something.
