MBFWA 15 Highlights: watson x watson

Stepping into the theatre just before the watson x watson show was like walking into a nightclub with all the lights turned on at the end of the night. The shiny floor, that would soon become a runway, was glistening in the reflected light and the neon w x w signage was almost blinding.

But the lights went down and the sound came on, and I was instantly transported to a place reminiscent of Studio 54.

Design team sisters, Somer and Liberty Watson, created this aptly named collection – DAYWALKER – for the girl who lives her life on the dance floor without a care in the world. The inspiration was drawn from all those nights that you had the most amazing time, especially when you hadn’t even planned to go out.

Somer says:

“We were inspired by images of Studio 54 with women in day –like sundresses under blue nightclub light, looking so sensual in a really sunny way, at night.”

“Equally, we were inspired by the reverse – an evening look dressed down for day. We loved that unexpected appropriation.”

The opening look was an engineered patchwork dress, organic in shape and feel, wrapped around the body – which opened the show. Other looks included modern suiting, karate-style belting, high-waisted and lots of feminine, floaty shapes in a palette of rich blood red, shades of black, and fresh blues pared back with summer crisp whites.

Jewellery played a key role in the show, as watson x watson partnered with Fiel Sol to develop a range of dramatic crystal earrings and cuffs that are bold and modern.
