It can be tough keeping beautiful in winter when all you want to do is hibernate in your bed. Avoiding common winter skin occurrences such as dry skin, chapped lips and brittle nails is crucial for your own comfort, not just aesthetic reasons. Besides, you don’t want to be scratching your scales while out to dinner, do you?

Though we know that we have to moisturise all year round, winter is especially important to keep the skin hydrated and soft. Pay special attention to areas that are more likely to become dry such as the elbows, hands, heels and around the base of the nose. Choose a hydrating moisturiser such as Estee Lauder Hydrationist Maximum Moisture Creme (1) to help protect skin against drying conditions for longer and apply twice per day. As for the rest of the body, a moisturiser with essential oils such as avocado, rosehip or almond are desirable as they retain more moisture. Try an organic product such as Appelles Sea Buckthorn Skin Lotion (2) which contains patchouli oil to sooth aggravated skin.

You may also notice that nails can become brittle and dry during the cold months, so it is important to keep them hydrated and strong to avoid any breakages. A hand and nail moisturiser is a two in one lotion that hydrates skin, nails and cuticles. Try Sukin Hand and Nail Cream (3).

Let’s not forget one of the most important ways to hydrate skin – drink water. You will hear this repeatedly, but keeping hydrated on the inside is just as important for healthy skin on the outside. Reducing exfoliation of the face during winter may also help with discomfort and dry skin and instead opt for a hydrating mask to replenish the skin’s moisture. Kora Organics Hydrating Mask (4) hydrates and rejuvenates skin.

Don’t forget to keep lips soft and kissable with a hydrating lip balm like Maybelline New York Baby Lips (5).
