Folk, boho, luxe western; whatever you want to call it, the inspiration behind one of winter’s strongest trends comes via rugged landscapes, earthy and natural tones, and rich, layered textures. The key piece is the poncho (monogrammed, of course – if you can get it), as featured in the Burberry and Roberto Cavalli Fall/Winter shows. Jackets and coats come adorned in shearling, suede and fringing, creating a clash of fabrics that somehow work, and manage to contrast nicely against the ethnic inspired prints and warm tones.

Ever lusted after your boyfriends big, cosy coat and thought you could pull it off better? Well you should totally give it a go, because oversized, androgynous silhouettes are the shape you will be relying on once the cold weather hits. Not only are they perfect for layering winter woolies underneath, but the clean lines and modern cuts make it the perfect coat for a chic, sophisticated look. Keep the length of the coat long, to balance out the volume, and try not to add too much heavy bulk beneath the coat (we know it gets cold though!). Our on-trend colour choices? Grey, camel and dusty pink.

Reporting for duty this winter has never looked so good, as this years military trend takes charge. Think structured blazer-style jackets with belt and pocket detailing or a hooded anorak for some serious street cred. Khaki is the obvious colour du jour, but you can also get away with camo, tan, navy and charcoal. Military styling requires confidence, a sharp eye for detail and fearlessness, so if you are ready to join the force, this could be just the trend for you this season.

Your jacket and coat options don’t end here though. We’ve noticed a certain fashion buzz around fur coats this season (fake of course, and in dreamy pastel shades and monochrome), while quilted vests and puffer jackets at Kenzo and Chloe were a highlight; perfect for that fresh-off-the-slopes look. And of course you can’t go past the classic trench, with that 3/4 length and wrap-around waist, it is an image of eternal elegance.
