A Classic VMAs Red Carpet

When Miley Cyrus is at the helm, you never know what’s going to come around the corner and this year’s VMAs red carpet was as crazy as the girl herself.

MORE: Best Dressed On The Teen Choice Awards Red Carpet

MTV’s Video Music Awards are always a display of outrageousness and this year, host Miley Cyrus ensured that she was the centre of attention when she hit the red carpet in an outfit that could be described as skimpy.

In the first of many teeny, tiny pieces of material, Miley appeared on the red carpet in what appeared to be a mini dress. Barely covering her nips and crystals covering a small amount of her behind. Modest, no. Ballsy, yes. Did it pay off? Miley is getting all the attention she wanted from her seatbelt strap, silvery outfit with thigh high boots, because no one could ignore that, but it was still trashy and distasteful, which seems to be Miley’s go to style now.

Nicki Minaj, who called out the host when accepting her award for Best Rap Video, hit the red carpet in a liquid gold and sheer number, plunging below her navel. Sleek hair and cat’s eye makeup and Nicki looked quite styling for the night of awards.

Taylor Swift and crew showed up as the best dressed all girl posse of all time. Showing plenty of skin, the group, led by Taylor in metallic houndstooth coordinates and dramatic eyes featured Gigi Hadid, Lily Aldridge, Karlie Kloss and Selena Gomez. Gigi’s yellow bodysuit with skirt combo looked fierce, but she didn’t look too impressed with her blown back hair and basic makeup and to be honest, neither were we. Lily Aldridge and Selena Gomez stuck with classic black and never regretted a thing.

Serayah aimed for a shredded theme, wearing a slitted white dress over a white underwear set and cage heels. Demi Lovato showed up in a pale pink mosaic style piece with nude heels, but again, we weren’t feeling the blown back hair and felt the look could have benefited from loose, tousled locks around her shoulders.

Our two favourites of the night were much more impressive than the aforementioned stars, keeping it formal and memorable, without being trashy. Rita Ora showed off her bulging assets in a black Vera Wang gown. The plunging neckline and criss-crossed straps were a simple accessory to the gorgeous feathered skirting and her dark nails and smokey makeup were super sultry.

Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens was our other favourite in her ethereal gown. With plenty of gypsy-inspired accessories, her perfect braids and natural makeup, Vanessa’s outfit was tasteful and gorgeous, a total standout from the near naked looks on the red carpet.

As for the rest of the outfits that graced us on the red carpet, we can’t say we’re overly impressed with the shredded, black gowns that swanned across the patch-worked, grey flooring and the Kardashians failed to impress us on their usual level of glam with Kylie’s fringe causing confusion, Kim’s unflattering safari inspired gown and Kourtney’s underwhelming pink jumpsuit.
