Australian Indigenous Fashion Week

The Australian Indigenous Fashion Week will made its debut on Friday, April 11. The event aimed to support the talents of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders across Australia and plans to hopefully launch the next Samantha Harris.

The successful two-day event, which will hopefully expand to a week-long event next year, not only nurtured budding design talent but offered help to indigenous models with their dreams by holding a modelling workshop, where participants were mentored in health, beauty, fashion, business and career training and social etiquette. Participants also modelled in runway shows.

Consumers also had the chance to experience Indigenous culture through the event and this will hopefully assist in integrating Indigenous fashion with that of mainstream.

The event housed 30 designers, artists and performers. With the focus not just on fashion, but also on Fair Trading and business between Indigenous designers and buyers, the Australian Indigenous Fashion Week is a step towards the Indigenous industry becoming both nationally and internationally recognised.
