It’s the thought that was on everyone’s mind as celebrities walked the red carpet today at The Academy Awards.

The hyped up Oscars are usually the pinnacle of fashion brilliance, setting the standard for the whole year and adding defining moments to the careers of the biggest stars around.

Sigh. We don’t want to be the ones who said it, but it really has to be said. Unfortunately, we were a little disappointed this year. The standout frocks were few and far between, which mediocrity reigned queen. While we know it shouldn’t, it casts a little shadow over the fashion year to come.

Lady Gaga made fashion history this time for a great reason – being the first celebrity to wear Alaia on the Oscars red carpet. However, the lobster gloves she chose to wear the gown with really dulled that sparkle. Emma Stone’s usually flawless outfitting was not really her colour and Gwyneth Paltrow was a little retro Carrie Bradshaw in her baby pink Ralph & Russo gown with an oversized, floral shoulder adornment.

Thankfully, there were some shining stars amongst the asteroid belt, Jennifer Aniston being one of them. In a sheer, beaded Versace gown, the actress showed off her tanned and toned legs with perfectly matched nude nails. Age really is just a number for Ms Aniston. Scarlett Johansson was also fit in Versace, and while we’re not particularly keen on the choker jewels, the figure hugging, emerald coloured number was sizzling hot, showing off her gorgeous curves.

Jennifer Lopez showed that, once again, she is the queen of the red carpet. Dressed in a tanned, sequinned and tulle skirted Elie Saab, the Latina diva showed off her (a couple) of her finest assets and her slicked back hair and pink lips looked contrastingly fierce to her princess-esque gown. Reese Witherspoon also looked fabulous in a monochrome Tom Ford, with a timeless, off the shoulder neckline and flattering black waist band. She looked very elegant and classy in this figure hugging gown.

Rita Ora, of course, worked the red carpet well. While her navy and gold Marchesa gown didn’t give us love at first sight like previous red carpet outfits, it did grow on us, especially with the singer’s gorgeous cropped cut. Sienna Miller donned Oscar de la Renta. It was understated but lovely with great detailing, like the lace skirting from the knees down.

The ladies in red, like Rosamund Pike in Givenchy, stood out on this year’s red carpet, despite the matching colour. The strapless, lace gown cinched Pike’s tiny waist and showed off a lovely bit of leg. Dakota Johnson showed everyone her version of the red room in a stunning Saint Laurent one shouldered gown. The embellished crystal strap was a beautiful touch and her up-do put all the focus on the dress. Margot Robbie, also dressed in Saint Laurent, smouldered in the sheer sleeved, plunging gown. Her blonde bob and red lips were perfect for the sultry look.

Last, but definitely not least on our best dressed list is Anna Kendrick. She looked like creamy perfection in a rose coloured, Thakoon dress with a crystal embellished halter. The cheeky keyhole showed just enough skin and her hair was on point. Well done again Anna, well done.
