The Australian Fashion Chamber has been launched to support the domestic fashion industry. The initiative headed by Edwina McCann, editor-in-chief of Vogue Australia is designed to promote local designers on an international scale. Working alongside the IMG Fashion, Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, The Textile Fashion Institute of Australia, Tony & Guy, AMP Capital and Woolmark, the not-for-profit organisation will aim to support emerging talent and provide leadership as well as education and affiliation.

Ms McCann will be the first chairperson of the AFC and is joined by Malcolm Carfrae from Calvin Klein, Anthony Kendal from MyTheresa.com, Melissa Grace from Woolmark and Kara Hurry who works on the OrotonGroup and Gap and Brooks Brothers. Joining them at the moment is Nancy Pilcher, Nicky Zimmerman, Leanne Whitehouse of The Whitehouse Institute of Design, Alison Veness editor of 10 Magazine and Kelly Kush, editor of Harper’s Bazaar. The other members of the twenty-person board will be announced on April 10th during Mercedes-Benz Australia Fashion Week.
With organisations such as this in Britain and the United States, it’s about time the AFC was formed to support our local designers. The AFC will run training and mentoring programs to educate our designers in the direction they should be taking their company. The AFC will also introduce the AFC Awards presented by AMP Capital.
